The Life and Legacy of Richard Hunt
|
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of esteemed American artist Richard Hunt in December 2023. Our journey with this prolific artist began in 1970 when Public Art UHS initiated a meaningful conversation to acquire his work. Today, we are honored to house one of his remarkable pieces, Firebird, 1978, within our collection at the UHCL campus.
In 1971, Richard Hunt made history as the first African-American sculptor to receive a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art. His incredible legacy encompasses over 160 public sculpture commissions, more than 150 solo exhibitions, and representation in over 100 public museums worldwide.
