
In Honor of Dr. Olin Johnson

Professor Emeritus Olin Glynn Johnson, 90, passed away peacefully at his home in The Woodlands, Texas, on Monday evening, April 6, 2026. Born on December 21, 1935, in the small town of Rockett, Ellis County, Texas, Olin was the only child of Olin and Ruth Johnson. He earned a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Mathematics from Southern Methodist University and Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1968.
After graduating, Olin and Ferol moved their family to Houston, where he would play an important role in advancing IBM's supercomputing efforts, all the while working part-time at Rice University. He joined The University of Houston in 1973, and in 1974 he became Chair of the Computer Science Department. Olin retired from the University of Houston in 2015. He served as a professor for over 40 years during which he played a pivotal role in the growth and development of the Computer Science Department.
