Speech-language Pathology graduate program earns Top 40 ranking

The speech-language pathology master’s program has advanced in the U.S. News & World Report Best Graduate Schools rankings for the second consecutive year, climbing to No. 39 nationwide.
The program jumped five spots from its No. 44 ranking last year.
“We have high-quality clinical training throughout the program including our University Speech-Language-Hearing clinic on campus, community partnerships and over 50 externship sites in the Houston area,” said Margaret Blake, chair of the communication sciences and disorders department.

After over 7 years of service, Dr. Margaret Blake steps down as the COMD Department Chair. Dr. Blake served as department chair from 2018 - 2025 and lead the department through many challenges and achievements. She will return to a research faculty position in the department. Thank you for your leadership!

Our doctoral students have been busy with their research and earning awards and grants.

- Ruiqing (Stephanie) Fan received the highly competitive F31 predoctoral fellowship training grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Her poster submission at the ASHA convention was also recognized as a meritorious and centennial submission.
- Sofia Machado was selected for ASHA’s Minority SLP (MSLP) leadership program, and received the Graduate Student Scholarship from the ASHFoundation.
- Abigail Dueppen received the New Century Doctoral Scholarship from the ASHFoundation
- Janelle Flores received the Elisabeth Wiig Doctoral Student Research Grant from the TSHFoundation.

Led by Dr. Kathy Ermgodts, our inaugural Peer Tutor group learned best practices for teaching and learning and used them to support undergraduate peers in several early undergraduate courses.

Interpreting and Translation - ASL
|
- In October, the ASL Society hosted a booth at the MATA Convention for the Deaf.
- The INTN 3430 class is the first course in the interpreting major focusing on Consecutive Interpretation and Translation. This past December, the junior class provided an ASL translation performance of a children story, “The Day the Crayons Quit”.
- The Junior INTN students provided the US anthem at the UH Football game in Fall 2025
